MANAGING KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER PROCESS IN OFFSHORE SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT: Overcoming the Complexity of Tacit Knowledge
نویسندگان
چکیده
The paper presents ongoing research into offshore software development and preliminary analysis of the process of knowledge transfer in distributed settings. The aim of the study is to enhance our understanding of managing knowledge transfer in virtual teams within the context of offshore software development. Virtual teams means individuals with different competencies who are located across time, space and cultures (Jarvenpaa and Leidner 1998). This study draws on a theoretical framework based on Nonaka’s SECI model (Nonaka 1994) and Ba (Nonaka and Konno 1998), which are extended to take account of virtual team settings. Empirical data is based on case studies of two small UK software firms engaging in offshore software development in India, Bangladesh and Malaysia. Findings enhance our understanding of how software firms manage knowledge transfer using information communication technologies (ICTs) to facilitate Ba in virtual software teams.
